editorial review

Ecuador's biggest claim to fame (and name) is its location right on the equator, The Middle of the World. In 1736, Charles-Marie de La Condamine made the measurements to show that this was indeed the equatorial line. The findings from his expedition gave rise to the metric system and proved that the world, though round, bulges at the equator.

At the center of La Mitad del Mundo stands a tall stone trapezoidal monument topped by a brass globe. If you're feeling touristy, take an elevator up to the top - it's a whole 30m (98ft) high.

Sundays are busy with quiteño families. If you don't mind crowds, it can be fun listening to a nine-piece salsa band rip up the equatorial line in bright Andean sunshine.
