overview

Halkidiki’s top cultural attraction is undoubtedly Mount Athos, with its beautiful Orthodox monasteries displaying religious frescoes and icons. However, as it was proclaimed the exclusive domain of monks and hermits by the Byzantine Emperor, it is open to male visitors only. Both men and women can take a boat trip around its perimeter, departing from Ouranoupolos. Halkidiki’s other main attraction is Petralona Cave with almost two kilometres of corridors decorated with impressive stalagmites and stalactites. Back on the earth’s surface visit one of Halkidiki’s unspoilt fishing villages where the waterside tavernas are sure to be serving delicious fresh seafood.
