overview

Monaco may be the second smallest country in the world (after the Vatican City), but it certainly packs a punch when it comes to high living. Surrounded by France on three sides at the easternmost end of the Côte d’Azur, this glamorous principality has Prince Albert II as its head of state and the famous House of Grimaldi has ruled since 1297. Monte-Carlo lies at its stylish heart where the jetset hang out in their super yachts, where the casinos thrive and the world flocks to see the Formula 1 Grand Prix. There are designer shops galore and top restaurants round every corner, the beautiful Old Town with picturesque parks and gardens and Larvotto Beach with its stripy parasols.

A Perfect Day

By Oliver Berry

The best way to start any day in Monaco is with a petit café at the Café du Paris, which makes the perfect vantage point for watching the daily roll-call of Bentleys and Porsches arriving at the Hôtel de Paris across the square. Then it's off for a stroll around the principality, starting off with a quick buzz around the designer boutiques and haute couture stores around place du Casino, before cutting across to the Port Hercule to check out the latest line-up of million-dollar yachts moored along the quayside. Next stop is the Musée Oceanographique and its fantastic ground-floor aquarium (with a quick stop-off en route to watch the changing of the guard at the Palais Princier). For lunch it's a baguette and a tarte aux fruits from one of the boulangeries in Monaco-Ville, best savoured on the tranquil terraces of the Jardins Saint-Martin. Once the midday heat kicks in I never feel like doing much, so it's either a quick bus ride over to the plage du Larvotto or a stroll down to the Port de Fontvieille, where there are plenty of shops and some intriguing museums to explore (including my personal favourite, the royal collection of classic cars). As dusk sets in it's time for supper - there are top-notch restaurants scattered all around the principality, but for something more affordable I'd try the budget cafes around the Port Hercule or the brasseries along ave des Spéluges. And for after-dark entertainment, there's really only one choice: a visit to the roulette wheels and blackjack tables of the Casino de Monte Carlo. Even if you don't feel like betting, watching a small fortune being frittered away on the spin of a roulette wheel is an absolutely essential part of the Monte Carlo experience.

when to go

Monaco is blessed with a typical Mediterranean climate with reliably hot sunny summers peaking in July and August and mild winters. Rain mostly falls during the cooler winter months.
