We stayed at the Elounda Gulf Villas in Crete in August. The resort offered a terrific mix of villas and a small number of rooms. The staff were outstanding, the food was good and this place was perfect for a relaxed family holiday.
The resort is 45 mins walk from Elounda and 15 mins in a taxi from Aghios Nikolaos - as well as being just 45 mins from the airport.
There are lots of bigger hotels in the area but they seemed expensive and lacking the intimacy of the Gulf Villas - though the other places do tend to have good facilities such as water-skiing (although that seemed very pricey).
