My love and I were chasing the setting sun westward along Brittany’s Côtes d'Armor. The next beach, port or bay was going to be the perfect one where the sleepy sun would paint the sky in bold crimsons; this was the life. And we caught it, I jumped out of the slowing car, camera in hand and ran to rest my telephoto lens on a handy wall. I held my breath and shot a few precious frames of slide film, enjoying the silhouettes of the conveniently placed lighthouse and fishermen on the jetty.
We found our chambre d'hôte in the middle of nowhere and were greeted by our hosts – a couple in their 50’s from Paris, a retired banker and an artist. In the morning light we could enjoy the gorgeously over-planted cottage garden in all its late summer finery and the chambre d'hôte’s highly individual colour scheme that only a painter could make work.
We sat down to a very appetising looking breakfast even though we did not know what the funny little cupped breads made like French toast and sprinkled with sugar were, apart from delicious. After eating more than our fill, our hosts told us that they were Craquelins, a local speciality.
Then we were off, hot on the Craquelin trail through winding country lanes heading to meet our baker. The proud makers were happy to show us around their bakery and explained the whole process from flour, to boiled dough, to baking and the final hard dry product that can be kept for ages before being revived by a nice bath in milk and egg. We took a few packets of Craquelins home and enjoyed them, but never quite recreated the perfection of our first bite in the strangely painted chambre d'hôte.
Luxury is the freedom to explore, to follow the sun or a passing whim. Luxury is a rare product made with skill, and love. Luxury is a moment of perfection caught in the web of time.
