Tobago is one of the most beautiful of the Caribbean islands. Unlike its larger neighbour, Trinidad, Tobago is small enough to get to know in just a brief stay. And getting to know it is a must.

Unlike most tourists, we were lucky enough to be staying "local" in a Japanese style colonial villa in the hills high above the capital, Scarborough. The days were spent exploring the island and its beaches, the best of which were well away from the resorts on the south coast. Swimming with a manta ray directly below in the sea was a highlight.

But the most memorable part of the holiday was simply eating on the veranda surrounded by the local wildlife. Our host laid out fruit for the birds on the garden wall each morning, with the result that we were often eating with the parrots and parakeets right next to us. A marvellous memory.
