I recently travelled out to the Maldives on our family holiday. From start to finish, I really couldn't have asked for a better time! I was dubious at first at the thought of taking a 7 year old to a 'couples/honeymoon' destination, however we spoke to many of our friends who convinced us it was the perfect family destination too, and that children we're accommodated for extremely well.
The holiday started as soon as we arrived at the airport! We flew Emirates Business Class which meant we were able to use the new lounge at Manchester Airport, and take advantage of the amazing food they freshly prepare for you. Ideally we would have flown with British Airway as the flight is direct, but we opted for Manchester as it was closer to home, which just meant we stopped for a few hours in Dubai - a chance to do some duty-free shopping!!
As soon as we arrived in the Maldives, we were whisked away to the resort's seaplane lounge like VIP's, and checked into the resort whilst we waited a short while for our seaplane to be prepared to take us on the 40 minute flight to Diva.
We spent the first 3 days of our holiday at Diva, which is a fantastic resort, very large with a good choice of restaurants. The room was fairly spacious too, we opted for the Beach Villa as we felt this was much safer for a 7 year old, and loved the idea of walking out of your room straight onto the beautiful white coral sand. Whilst at the resort we took advantage of the complimentary watersports which were great fun for us to do as a family. They were all extremely safe, and the staff advise you of where you can and can't go - basically the calmest and most shallow waters at the resort which was reassuring. The food, service and accommodation were all excellent. I'd definitely recommend their Maldivian night, as it's great entertainment for the children at dinner.
We then moved on to Four Season Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa. We checked into our Beach Bungalow with a Pool with a very welcoming surprise for our daughter - not only was there an assortment of chocolate, sweets etc, there was a bag of goodies including a water gun! Definitely a good choice, as our daughter didn't come out of the pool for the next 3 day, which meant we could sunbathe whilst she played in the pool. I loved the concept of being in villa with everything you needed around you, and not having to venture very far - incredibly relaxing! Although the resort is quiet, there are still activities you can enjoy with a cocktail after dinner such as pool and table tennis! Our daughter didn't attend kid's club at the resort, although it did look excellent and had a varied programme for the time in which we were there. In the short time we were there, I did managed to squeeze in one spa treatment which was excellent. You depart from the jetty on a small Dhoni boat (about 2 minutes) over to the spa which is set on its own small island. They even allowed my daughter to have a pedicure so she could experience the spa whilst I enjoyed my massage.
Finally our last 3 nights were spent at Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru. I can honestly say that the accommodation was probably the best I'd ever experieced - and the largest out of the three resorts! We were lucky enough to have been upgraded to the Beach Villa with Pool which was probably about 4 times the size of the pool we had at Four Seasons Kuda Huraa - again perfect for lazy days around the pool in the comfort and privacy of our own villa. During our stay the three of us snorkelled together, went kayaking, fed sharks and played lots of games of pool in the evenings. I'd highly recommend feeding the fish at 5pm by the marine centre - it's great for children, and the marine staff are extremely knowledgeable, and happy to answer any questions you have.
Overall the entire experience of a family holiday in the Maldives was just perfect! Our daughter got to experience and learn so much, whilst we were able to enjoy and relax in this beautiful and romantic destination.
