With the increased number of flights from the UK to Fes, now is a fantastic time to visit this diverse and beautiful city. Only 3 hours from London and you arrive in a completely different environment - a medina full of tiny alleys with donkeys, children and shop stands jostling for space. It is a full assault on the senses, the spice smells, the heat, the sweat, the shining crafts, the food, the flies and calls to prayer and occasional glimpses into spectacular mosques where the Fassis flock.
And what better than, after an afternoon of sensory overload, to relax in a Riad (old Moroccan house built around a courtyard) more akin to an Arabic palace. I stayed at Riad Le Cle de Fes and here the heat fades away, the interior amazes and the staff are helpful without being obtrusive.
Fes makes a fantastic long weekend get away that makes you feel like you are more than just a few hours from Europe. A fantastic place which hasn't yet got the hoards of tourists in the way that Marrakech does. Get there before they do!
