The absurd pricing of air travel in India

Had a nasty eperience trying to obtain tickets from Bombay to Jaipur last week. Like in most places, it is cheaper to travel if you buy tickets in advance; but nowhere is the penalty for not buying early as stiff as it is in Inida.
On the Bombay - Jaipur sector for instance, had to shell out a whopping Rs. 12,100/- for a one way ticket last week on a last minute booking. The amount is obscene when you bear in mind that the early booking return fare is just above 5,000.
The term 'low cost' carrier is a complete misnomer in India. They are ready to cut your throat with their fares if you have the misfortune of having to buy a ticket without adequate notice.
