If you think Oman is like its neighbour, the UAE, you will be unprepared for its rugged mountain scenery and rocky bays. The combination of blue water to the front and dramatic mountains behind is both spectacular and peaceful and for anyone yet to visit Oman, there’s never been a better time to go.
Oman Air, the new rising star of aviation in the Middle East (whose CEO is ex-Emirates, and it shows), offers outstanding products in all classes on its new A330s and the quality of hotels in Oman makes it perfect for a winter break to escape dull British days.
Oman offers experiences as varied as dolphin-watching – many varieties are seen in large schools in Omani waters - visiting the markets in the mountains and being transported back to biblical times by the regular livestock sales.
Oman Air is now the only airline flying direct from London Heathrow to the capital, Muscat and is in the process of introducing a revolutionary new Business Class, with fully flat beds in a 1-2-1 configuration. From Muscat, in addition to the other major cities in the Middle East, Oman Air also connects to multiple destinations in India, Pakistan as well as Bangkok and the Maldives.
After a very pleasant flight and buying our visas at the Travelex desk on the way to immigration upon arrival in Muscat, we were immediately struck by the friendliness of the Omanis. Not greeted by the usual surly immigration staff, we were asked if this was our first visit to the country, we replied that it was. “Welcome”, said the immigration officer. How refreshing.
The pleasantly relaxing experience continued into The Chedi, our home for the next few days. Spread over beautifully landscaped lawns and water gardens, adjacent to its own beach, The Chedi’s high quality accommodations are scattered throughout its grounds in two-storey white buildings with dark wooden trellising with a choice of two pools to lounge at, as well as that beach. Even better for us – the large infinity pool is set aside for adults only.
While sunbathing, the welcome re-filling of your glass with iced water, with a hint of lemon and mint is one of the many thoughtful touches that punctuate your stay. The Chedi has three main dining options (with extensive wine lists, this is not a dry country) including one on the beach serving outstanding seafood – all beautifully presented as the firebowls flicker by the side of the sand.
A great airline experience, welcoming people and warm days by the beach make a few days in Oman the perfect cure for winter blues.
