Inspirational Iguassu in luxury and Orient-Express style

Seeing one of the world’s most incredible natural sights can now be done in true comfort thanks to the latest hotel from Orient-Express.

What’s more, the new luxury hotel at Brazil’s amazing Iguassu Falls boasts some of the best eco-credentials in Latin America.



As part of its £23 million renovation of the Hotel das Cataratas, Orient-Express has spent £2.5 million on environmental initiatives to enhance the Unesco-listed Iguassu National Park in which the hotel sits. These measures included the underground relocation of overhead electricity cables, refurbishment of the park gate entrance and the construction of a six-mile cycle path to provide a way from the park entrance to the hotel.

The hotel is on the doorstep of what is considered to be the last extensive tract of Atlantic rainforest in Brazil, and another Orient-Express-driven initiative has been the foundation of the eight-year “Iguassu carnivores” project. The aim is to track the fascinating movements and behavioural patterns of national park carnivores such as giant anteaters, pumas, jaguars and panthers with a view to securing their long-term survival.



There are also plans for the property to apply for ISO14001 and SA8000 accreditation in 2010 which, if successful, will make Hotel das Cataratas the first in South America to hold such global awards for sustainability.


Outside of the environmental work, the hotel itself has been completely overhauled to make the most of its enviable location just two minutes’ stroll from the world-famous Falls.

The hotel’s 193 rooms, including 15 suites, have been kitted out to the highest standards in Portuguese style with paintings of local flora and fauna by celebrated Brazilian artist Ludmilla de Montes. There are also two new restaurants and a spa that uses the famous Brazilian beauty range Natura.
